The Top Aesthetic Procedures for Men: Trends and Preferences

Aesthetic procedures have been gaining popularity among male patients in recent years, as many are eager to enhance their physical features, and thus, be able to demonstrate more confidence both personally and professionally. As societal senses change and men begin looking for beauty procedures, more and more aesthetic treatments are being designed specifically for men.

In this blog, you will learn about the most popular procedures (surgical and non-surgical) performed on men, the new trends, and how these procedures have changed (and are changing) the male grooming / self-care landscape.

Overview of Men’s Aesthetic Needs

For men, the emphasis on beauty may be very subtle, natural-looking enhancements that are not going to make them look feminine. The objectives are mainly in the realms of facial rejuvenation, body sculpting, and hair restoration.

Male patients are more inclined to jawline contouring, improved facial lines and wrinkles, and fat reduction treatments. Men being more open to the advantages of aesthetic procedures may also partially be due to the influence of social media combined with a trend towards appearance in the workplace.

But among the top concerns of men seeking cosmetic work are these:

  1. Facial ageing: A common complaint among men who seek out aesthetic treatment includes the presence of wrinkles, fine lines, or sagging skin.
  2. Body contouring: Specifically targeting muscle definition and fat removal, body contouring is a sought-after non-surgical approach for men.
  3. Hair restoration: Hair loss continues to be a major concern for many male patients, so procedures such as hair transplants and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy* are on the rise.

Top Non-Surgical Procedures for Men

Non-invasive treatments are very popular with male patients because of their quick recovery time and less invasive methods, which typically end up with natural-looking results. The most go-to men-preferred procedures include:

TreatmentDescription
Botulinum toxin (Botox)Botox is gaining popularity among men who seek to reduce wrinkles like forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines. Treatments can be tailored for men, who typically have heavier facial muscles, to maintain a natural, masculine appearance.
Dermal fillersTemporary fillers are used to add volume, commonly around the cheeks and jawline. Men use fillers for a sharper jawline or to reduce under-eye hollowing, creating a fresh and energetic look with subtle, natural enhancements.
Body contouringBody contouring options like CoolSculpting and radiofrequency devices target stubborn fat areas. These non-surgical treatments help men achieve a more sculpted physique by reducing fat in areas like the abdomen and flanks.
Laser hair removalLaser hair removal is ideal for men wanting a clean-shaven look or to reduce excess body hair. It offers a permanent solution for hair reduction, eliminating the need for frequent shaving or waxing, and reducing issues like razor burn.
Hair restoration TreatmentsHair restoration, including hair transplants and PRP therapy*, offers solutions for hair thinning and male-pattern baldness. PRP therapy, in particular, is popular for promoting natural hair growth without being invasive.

[Case Studies] Dermal Fillers in Male Patients

Published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, 2021, below are the three figures depicting examples of masculinisation of the lower third of the face using dermal filler in male patients. Each figure shows before-and-after images of men with weak jawlines and chins, who underwent non-surgical facial contouring.

Each case highlights the effective use of dermal filler in achieving a stronger, more masculine facial structure.

Figure 1: A 29-year-old man with Fitzpatrick skin type III underwent facial masculinisation using 10 ml of dermal filler. Before the treatment, his chin was recessed, his lower lip lacked support, and his jawline was poorly defined. He received injections at various points along the jawline and chin, which helped improve the projection of his chin and the definition of his jaw. Four weeks after the procedure, his lower face showed noticeable enhancement, particularly in the profile view, where the chin and jawline appeared much more defined and proportionate.

Figure 2: A 44-year-old man with Fitzpatrick skin type III underwent facial masculinisation using 5 ml of dermal filler. Before the procedure, his chin was weak, tilted upwards, and his lower face lacked vertical dimension. The treatment involved injecting 1.4 ml of filler on each side of point C1 using a cannula to reduce the labial-mental angle. At point C2, smaller injections were made to increase chin projection and improve the lower face’s vertical dimension. Additional injections at point C5 helped square the chin and add lateral support, while point C4 addressed a chin dimple. Lastly, injections at point Jw4 redefined and lifted the jawline. The procedure improved the chin’s projection, jawline definition, and overall facial contour.

Figure 3: A 29-year-old man with Fitzpatrick skin type IV underwent facial masculinisation using 8 ml of dermal filler. Before the treatment, he had a weak chin, poor jawline definition, and lacked labiomental projection. To improve this, 1.5 ml of filler was injected on each side at the jaw angle (Jw1) and body (Jw3) to define the jawline, and additional injections at Jw4 and Jw5 lifted it further. The chin was enhanced with injections at C1 and C2, increasing vertical height and projection. Smaller doses at points C5 and C6 were used to square the chin and smooth the pre-jowl sulcus. Post-treatment, the patient had a more defined jawline and improved chin shape.

The Role of Technology in Men’s Aesthetic Treatments

Advancements in technology are paving the way for better and easier-to-access aesthetic procedures that even men are taking advantage of these days.

Technological advancements such as guided ultrasound therapies, next-generation laser devices, and AI-driven systems have improved the accuracy of these procedures, allowing for safer and more reliable results.

One example is 3D imaging technology that enables providers to show their male patients what they expect their results will look like before the actual procedure, offering greater confidence and information that can lead to a patient decision.

In addition, modern hair transplant surgeries have the advantage of robotic systems to help remove and implant hair follicles with precise accuracy, creating more natural-looking hairlines.

Another innovation would be the electromagnetic body contouring technologies like EMSculpt, which uses electromagnetic energy to produce muscle contractions, leading to muscle growth and fat reduction at the same time. This is a great innovation for men working hard to reach fitness goals.
