Frown Lines: What Causes Them, and How To Get Rid of Them

Have you looked in the mirror recently and found that you have frown lines that appear more prominently than they have in the past? Fine lines on the forehead are common tell-tale signs of ageing that can creep up on you, appearing gradually as your skin loses collagen and elasticity and can no longer return to the smooth position it once did. Frown lines will inevitably become more pronounced and deepen over time, and while perfectly natural, there are steps you can take to slow the process. While diet and lifestyle play a significant role, many individuals opt for a non-surgical upper face wrinkles procedure, also known as frown Botox®, to help wind back the years.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the significant causes of forehead wrinkles and preventative measures you can take to reduce unwanted frown lines.

Causes of frown lines

Although inevitably brought on by ageing skin, several other external factors may play a role in causing wrinkles to appear prematurely and more prominently. These include:

Genetics: Your DNA may play a part in your skin’s resilience. The less resilient it is, the more likely wrinkles and fine lines are to appear. Unfortunately, this is a factor out of your control, and if your parents and grandparents have experienced frown lines, it is more likely that you will too.

Time spent in the sun: While vitamin D from the sun is good for your skin, harmful UV rays can break down collagen, making you more vulnerable to developing fine lines. If you don’t wear sunglasses, you may also find that the sun’s glare causes you to frown more often and, therefore, may contribute to the formation of wrinkles.

Stress: Feelings of anxiety and worry may cause your face to form a knotted expression. While infrequent stress at low levels is unlikely to have a significant impact, chronic and persistent feelings of anxiety and tension can play a role in creating new lines or deepening existing wrinkles.

How to reduce frown lines

Forehead wrinkles can be frustrating, especially as you notice them appearing and becoming more pronounced over time. Luckily, you can take steps to reduce them, both naturally and via cosmetic treatment. These include:

Reduce your stress – As a mental health condition, it isn’t easy to eliminate altogether. Instead, taking steps to improve stress symptoms can help you manage and relieve its effects. Exercising regularly, maintaining a consistent sleep schedule and taking the time to practice self-care can help minimise stress levels and prevent premature signs of ageing on the face and neck.

Improve your diet – The more you take care of yourself on the inside, the better you’ll look and feel on the outside. By packing your diet with fruit, vegetables, minerals and vitamins, you can supply your skin with the nourishment it needs to regenerate its cells and fight against ultraviolet ageing, frown lines and wrinkles.

Look after your skin in the sun – By wearing sunglasses, you can avoid squinting or frowning in the sun’s bright light and keep the delicate skin around the eye area better protected. Wearing a high SPF also plays a major role in preventing fine lines and wrinkles.

Frown Botox® – Opting to undergo a non-surgical upper face wrinkle treatment, often referred to as frown Botox®, is a highly effective and minimally invasive way to reduce forehead wrinkles, giving you smoother and more youthful-looking skin. Botulinum toxin is injected into the forehead area where lines may appear to freeze the muscles, which would typically move when you show expression on your face. Dermal filler is also injected to improve the shape of the forehead and reduce static lines and wrinkles. With a frown Botox® treatment, patients can enjoy the added benefit of little downtime and visible results almost immediately.
