5 Natural Remedies for Younger Looking Skin

Whilst expensive anti-ageing creams and serums can often be worth their weight in gold, there is nothing like discovering an effective free or low-cost remedy with organic ingredients taken straight from your kitchen cupboard.

With autumn in full swing and winter very much on the way, now is the perfect time to show some extra love and nourishment to your current skincare regime. In this post, we’re breaking down five of our favourite natural skin care treatments to combat those fine lines and dark circles and keep your complexion glowing right through till the new year.

Coconut oil

With plenty of healthy fats and vitamins, coconut oil is a fantastic natural skin care remedy that can give your skin a much-needed boost of powerful antioxidant nourishment. This edible oil comes from the coconut’s wick, milk and meat and has long been a popular ingredient in beauty and skincare products — plus, it makes your skin smell delightful! By regularly adding coconut oil to your wellness routine, you can also help to stimulate collagen production — the body’s most abundant protein, which can improve skin elasticity and aid in the prevention and reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Although the strong scent of apple cider vinegar may be divisive, there’s no denying it’s a natural skin care powerhouse. Apple cider vinegar contains several health-boosting compounds, including beta-carotene and quercetin, which are both considered to have anti-ageing properties. These compounds come together to balance out the skin and support increased collagen production. We recommend adding one tablespoon to water for a standalone cleansing treatment or mixing it with your daily cleanser for a deeper, more balanced clean.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is derived from the seed of the jojoba plant and has been used for many years by Native Americans for its innumerable benefits. Its unique properties make it a light yet deeply nourishing moisturiser that penetrates below the skin’s surface and protects the skin barrier. While you’ll find jojoba oil as a natural ingredient in many moisturisers, purchasing a bottle in its purest form and incorporating it into your routine will also work wonders for giving your skin a fresh winter glow.

Grape Seed Extract

This popular fruit is well known for its remarkable anti-ageing properties. Grape seed extract may play a role in preventing the collagen your skin produces from being damaged, thus reducing the rate at which it breaks down and forms lines and wrinkles. Applying a few drops of grape seed extract to your face with a cotton pad directly before bed makes for a powerful overnight treatment that will have you waking up with skin that feels refreshed and rejuvenated.

Avocado

This green superfood is packed with vitamins C and E, which are highly effective in protecting against damaging free radicals that age your skin. Its main healthy fat, oleic acid, can also help to increase sebum production, providing extra nourishment to dehydrated skin and restoring suppleness to your complexion. When mixed with organic honey and yoghurt, avocado makes for an intensely refreshing face mask and an effective natural skin care treatment that helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Final thoughts

Although there is an abundance of excellent natural skin care treatments that can help improve your complexion and fight the various signs of ageing, it’s important to note that prevention is key. Drinking at least eight glasses of water daily can keep your body hydrated and maintain your skin’s elasticity. A diet rich in fruits and leafy green vegetables will also help you increase your water intake and deliver essential nutrients and antioxidants, supporting healthy, glowing skin.

Finally, the daily use of a high-quality SPF on your face and any areas of the body that will be exposed to the sun is an absolute must. Even in a temperamental (and often overcast!) climate such as that of the UK, up to 80% of the sun’s harmful rays can still penetrate the cloud cover and damage your skin. By getting into the habit of consistent sunscreen application that becomes as natural as brushing your teeth, you can give your skin the best possible chance of maintaining a healthy, youthful glow that makes you feel good inside and out.
